Join Tommy Sands and friends for a (fairly steep) leisurely stroll up to the local beauty spot from which the festival takes its name. When you get there, enjoy a feast of songs, stories and the best of craic.

                                AVALON IN CONCERT

 

Avalon is a Northern Irish ensemble with strong classical and traditional roots.  They perform gems of Celtic and American folk and traditional music, interwoven with music by composers such as Bach, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, as well as their own original compositions.  Along with violins, viola and cello, Avalon performs with uillean pipes, whistle, flute, guitar and bodhran.

With Special Guest Clive Gregson

 

Eddi Reader is internationally known both for her work with Fairground Attraction and an amazing solo career.  Eddi had a UK number 1 with Attraction’s first single Perfect and in 1994 she was voted best female singer in the Brit Awards.  Since then she has become well known for her interpretations of the songs and poems of Robert Burns.

 

Eddi will be joined on stage by Boo Hewerdine on guitar and Alan Kelly on accordion.

 

Clive Gregson is an accomplished singer, musician and record producer.  He was a member of the Richard Thompson Band, and more recently the Nanci Griffith Band.  He has also collaborated with Boo Hewerdine and Eddi Reader, and has a string of solo albums.

Although best known for songs chronicling the life of his beloved north-east England, Jez Lowe is a lyricist and performer of universal insight and appeal. This is an opportunity to hear about Jez and his lyrics and get a taste of his songs.

The Open Stage is an opportunity for artists, new and established, to perform at the festival in the welcoming surrounding of the Lunchtime Folk Club. This is also an opportunity for festival organisers to hear artists who they might like to book for next year’s festival.

 

Gifford Lind is a firm friend of the festival, a wonderful singer and writer of songs and we are delighted he is able to return to this year’s festival.  Originally from Greenock in Scotland, he now lives in Dunfermline.  His songs feature life in Scotland, recent and not so recent, and he performs in both a traditional and contemporary manner.  Gifford’s humour and ability to entertain endear him to the festival.

Dr. Nancy Iverson (USA) presents a remarkable documentary on how she taught young American Indians on                         their reservation on Wounded Knee and how she subsequently swam with them from San Francisco across the                     Bay to Akcatraz - an amazing feat of self confidence and endurance. A discussion will follow the film.

This festival performance follows unanimous acclaim for Jez Lowe’s fourteenth album of original songs, ‘Doolally’, released with the Bad Pennies in 2005.  It sees the band returning to a more acoustic sound, playing to the strengths of, arguably, the strongest Bad Pennies line up to date.

The Bad Pennies are Kate Bramley (violin and vocals), Andy May (small pipes, whistle, piano accordion) and Sean Taylor (bass, vocals).

Tanante are a diverse group of individuals with a common passion for rhythm and the rediscovery of its social and spiritual importance. The name Tanante is an African word meaning ‘no evil’. The group perform the lively traditional drumming music of West Africa and have a great respect for its traditions and culture

Born in Rostrevor, Pauline is going to use the Early Evening Folk Club to launch her solo album ‘Silent Love’.  It was recorded at CMG studios in Rostrevor and features such highlights as ‘In the End’, in memory of Pauline’s mum, a much loved Rostrevor lady, now passed away, and ‘We Closed Our Eyes’, for all those children who suffer as a result of war.

Christy McGuigan

Currently residing in Rostrevor, Christy’s versatility is clear in the varied musical styles and instrumentation which compliment his lyrics and distinctive vocals.  With thought provoking lyrics and jovial live performances.  Christy’s collection of well-crafted songs has endeared him to an ever increasing legion of fans.

Their first album, ‘Four Miles from Anywhere’, continues to be an outstanding first album and their follow-up is eagerly awaited.  The Rooney Family are an exceptionally talented musical family with individual members achieving Ulster and All Ireland Championship titles. Their performances are steeped in the Irish tradition but new tunes and songs constantly emerge reflecting the countries they have visited and new musical experiences..                 A chance to hear singers sharing songs and how and why they came either to write or sing them

Songs from Ireland, Scotland and Israel.

A mixture of contemporary, folk and traditional songs from 3 different cultures.  Fil Campbell is well known to festival audiences, as a songwriter and interpreter of songs – she has recently added a new  collection to her repertoire from her TV series Songbirds.

Doris Rougvie from Scotland is a wonderful singer of traditional songs and leads Scotland’s Celtic Connections Traditional Sessions for the entire three weeks of the festival.

Laurie Ornstein is from Israel and plays guitar, Appalachian dulcimer and sings both in English and Hebrew.  We welcome Laurie to her fourth year at the festival.

An opportunity to hear John sharing his songs and how he came to write them.  John, from Wisconsin USA, has never been to the festival before, but did play a concert in Rostrevor back in 2003.  John plays excellent guitar and wrote the lovely ‘Up In County Down’, during his many tours of Ireland.

                                Special Guest BARRY McSHERRY: Singer/Songwriter, Lurgan.

 

                                Mojo Kelt was formed in January 2006 and is a mix of traditional Celtic folk music with rock drums and funk bass.

Building on some of the styles created by Planxty, the Bothy Band and others,  Mojo Kelt have created a sound that has not been heard in traditional music since these bands left the scene, a sound of driving melodies and rhythms combined with sensitive and subtle playing.

With a line-up that includes former members of Polydor recording artists ‘Heritage’, Mojo Kelt has a strong musical pedigree and will continue to develop their sound in the coming months and years. The band members are Paul McKernan, (a member of Dolloghan and former member of Heritage), Adrian McParland (former member of Heritage), Brendan Gorman (former member of Heritage), Tom Watson (member of Tilted and former member of Zarb).

There is hardly anyone who has not heard of Willie McBride, the young soldier in the first world war, over whose grave the sun shines in The Green Fields of France. Indeed the folk ballad No Man’s Land has become a world renowned classic along with such other household greats as Now I’m Easy, Leaving Nancy and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. The festival is proud to offer you a rare opportunity to enjoy Eric Bogle in concert – the man responsible for these wonderful songs.
